US Warns Nigerians Against AI-Edited Passport Photos

The United States Mission in Nigeria issued a warning to intending travelers regarding the use of artificial intelligence or digital editing tools on passport photographs. The mission stated that altered images would not be accepted for visa applications.

In a statement posted on its official X handle on Saturday, the mission emphasized that passport photos must be recent, taken within the past six months, and must clearly resemble the applicant. It warned that submitting an edited photo would significantly delay the application process.

The mission reiterated this message through a flier, stating, “Do not use AI or digital editing tools on your passport photo. The Department of State will not accept photos that are edited or filtered.” Applicants were directed to consult the full photo requirements on the State Department’s website, travel.state.gov/photo.

This advisory is part of a broader initiative by U.S. authorities to prevent the use of AI-manipulated images in official documentation, as border agencies increasingly rely on unaltered photographs for identity verification.
