Todd Blanche Set for Confirmation as US Attorney General

Todd Blanche, who has been serving as the acting US attorney general, was poised for formal confirmation on a Friday after Senate Republicans dismissed Democratic concerns regarding the politicization of the Justice Department. Blanche, previously Donald Trump's personal lawyer, faced potential embarrassment due to narrow Republican control in the Senate, especially after two senators from his party announced they would not support him.

However, Senator Bill Cassidy publicly declared his support, which was crucial for Blanche's confirmation. Democrats opposed Blanche, accusing him of treating the Justice Department as a personal law firm for Trump.

A significant issue in his confirmation was his proposal for a $1.8 billion fund for victims of politicized prosecutions and an immunity agreement for Trump regarding tax audits. Blanche addressed internal party opposition by scrapping the political fund and limiting the audit immunity to past tax years.

He has been acting attorney general since Trump fired Pam Bondi in April.
