Lagos Judiciary Summit Advocates for Faster Justice Delivery

The Lagos State Judiciary's Legal Year Summit took place at Jewel Aeida, Lekki, with the theme “Justice as an Economic Infrastructure: Strengthening the Judiciary for Africa’s Fifth Largest Economy.” Stakeholders, including Chief Justice of Nigeria Hon. Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun and former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola, called for judicial independence, integrity, and technology-driven reforms to improve justice delivery. Fashola delivered the Keynote Address, suggesting a comprehensive survey of court users and the establishment of a judicial ombudsman for independent feedback.

Attorney-General Lawal Pedro, SAN, highlighted delays in case disposal as a significant challenge, emphasizing the need for collective responsibility among the Judiciary, Executive, Legislature, legal profession, and the public. Speaker Mudashiru Obasa advocated for better public understanding of legal processes in indigenous languages.

The summit followed the commencement of the 2026/2027 Legal Year, marked by thanksgiving services attended by judges, magistrates, lawyers, and government officials. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu urged the protection of judicial independence, while Chief Judge Hon. Justice Kazeem Alogba pledged to uphold the rule of law.
