TUC Suspends Shutdown of Federal Unity Colleges

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has suspended its planned shutdown of Federal Unity Colleges in response to the concession of King’s College, Lagos, to the King’s College Old Boys’ Association (KCOBA). TUC General Secretary Nuhu Toro announced this suspension following a meeting with the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, and other stakeholders in Abuja on Monday.

The suspension allows a newly formed seven-member committee to address concerns raised by the unions regarding the management of King’s College. Toro described the meeting as productive, indicating that the unions' concerns were acknowledged.

He emphasized that the suspension does not signify a permanent halt to industrial action, as the unions will monitor the committee's recommendations. Alausa instructed all Federal Unity Colleges to resume academic activities immediately.

The committee will include representatives from the Federal Ministry of Education and will consider additional recommendations related to the management agreement with KCOBA. The government clarified that King’s College has not been sold or privatized.
