Diphtheria Outbreak Claims Two Lives in Abuja

Two individuals have died due to a diphtheria outbreak in Abuja, as confirmed by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA). Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, the Mandate Secretary for Health Services and Environmental Secretariat, representing FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, announced the fatalities during an advocacy campaign at the Emir of Karshi’s Palace.

Laboratory tests revealed five confirmed cases of diphtheria, with two resulting in death. Fasawe indicated that 10 of the 15 suspected cases were negative, while 15 additional suspected cases are under investigation.

Diphtheria, caused by the bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae, can lead to severe symptoms, including difficulty breathing. The FCTA has initiated an Incident Management Team to trace contacts, provide preventive antibiotics, and conduct active case searches in affected communities.

Vaccination efforts will prioritize zero-dose and under-immunized children, with parents urged to verify their children's vaccination status.
