Falconets Fall 0-2 to Spain in U20 World Cup Opener

Nigeria’s U20 women’s national team, known as the Falconets, commenced their campaign at the 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Poland with a 0-2 defeat against Spain on Monday evening at the Arena Sosnowiec. Spain took an early lead in the 13th minute when Marisa Garcia scored past goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma.

The Falconets responded with determination, creating several half-chances but failed to equalize before halftime. Under the guidance of Coach Moses Aduku, the Falconets showed renewed energy in the second half, controlling parts of the game and pushing for a goal.

However, Spain's goalkeeper Lopez delivered a solid performance, maintaining Spain's lead. In the 72nd minute, Spain extended their advantage with a counterattack goal from Alba Cerrato, sealing the match at 2-0.

The Falconets demonstrated quality and determination but struggled to convert opportunities against a well-organized Spanish defense. They will now prepare for their next group match against China PR on Thursday, September 10.
