UBEC Launches Comprehensive 10-Year Education Roadmap

The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) will commence the implementation of its 10-year roadmap in October, aimed at transforming the delivery, planning, and monitoring of basic education in Nigeria. The 2026–2035 Universal Basic Education Roadmap seeks to transition from fragmented projects to a comprehensive approach that addresses the specific needs of schools.

Dr. Aisha Garba, the Executive Secretary of UBEC, announced this initiative during a consultative workshop in Abuja with chairmen of the 36 State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs) and directors of the commission. The new framework mandates states to adopt a “whole school approach,” ensuring that all deficiencies in a school are identified and addressed before intervention plans are approved.

This includes considering needs for fencing, toilets, and furniture alongside classroom construction. Additionally, changes to the matching grant framework will allow states greater flexibility in directing UBEC funds towards their most pressing basic education needs, accommodating priorities such as furniture and teacher recruitment.
