UBEC Implements Whole School Approach for Public Schools

The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has directed a transition from isolated classroom construction to a comprehensive whole school approach, requiring public schools to be equipped with essential facilities such as classrooms, toilets, water, electricity, fencing, security, and digital learning infrastructure. Dr Aisha Garba, the executive secretary of UBEC, made this announcement in Abuja during an inspection of schools, where she noted that over 4,000 classrooms have been renovated and more than 200 schools have benefited from this new approach.
Garba emphasized that the reform aims to address the overall needs of schools rather than focusing on isolated projects. The new minimum standards mandate that all levels of government assess the needs of entire schools before undertaking renovations or construction.
Additionally, UBEC has commissioned 74 Digital Learning Centres and established over 2,000 such centers under the current administration. The inspection included visits to the Primary and Government Junior Secondary School, Nyanya Hausawa, and Model Girls’ Junior Secondary School, Aco Estate, Lugbe.
