UBEC Launches 10-Year Plan to Revamp Nigeria's Education

The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has unveiled a 10-year plan, the Universal Basic Education Roadmap 2026–2035, aimed at transforming Nigeria’s basic education system. During a consultative workshop in Abuja with chairmen of the 36 State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs) and UBEC directors, Executive Secretary Dr. Aisha Garba emphasized that SUBEBs must assess all deficiencies in schools before receiving funding for renovations.

She stated that a comprehensive approach is necessary, considering facilities such as classrooms, fencing, toilets, furniture, and digital infrastructure. Garba introduced the Basic Education Action Plan Management System (BEAPMS), a digital platform designed to enhance planning, monitoring, transparency, and accountability, allowing community involvement in project oversight.

The revised matching grant formula will enable states to prioritize funding for specific needs, including rehabilitation and additional teachers. Prof. Shehu Adaramaja, Dean of SUBEB Chairmen, noted that the consultation would establish a unified direction for basic education development over the next decade.
