UBEC Launches Annual Grants for Primary Schools in Kano

The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has introduced an annual school grant initiative aimed at enabling public primary schools to conduct urgent infrastructure repairs and improve learning environments. This initiative was announced by the Executive Secretary of UBEC, Dr Aisha Garba, during a five-day regional thematic workshop on the HOPE-EDU Programme held in Kano.
Represented by the Deputy Director of Social Mobilisation, Sahabo Basa, Garba explained that the initiative is part of Disbursement-Linked Indicator (DLI) 7 of the programme, which empowers school management to create safer learning environments. The workshop focused on ensuring that education funds reach schools promptly and are managed transparently.
Garba identified challenges such as timely fund release and the capacity of officials managing resources. She urged participants to develop solutions and state-specific action plans.
The HOPE-EDU Programme Manager, Mr Mayowa Aleshin, noted that the programme became effective on February 27, 2026, and emphasized the importance of aligning roles for effective implementation.
