UBEC Launches N5 Billion School Improvement Program

The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) unveiled a N5 billion school improvement program for 2025 during a flag-off ceremony in Abuja. Aisha Garba, representing the Deputy Executive Secretary Technical, Rasaq Akinyemi, announced that the program will benefit 518 communities across 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), targeting underserved areas with significant infrastructure deficits.

The initiative aims to improve basic education delivery, strengthen community participation, and reduce the number of school dropouts. The program includes a learner retention initiative, which is expected to support one million learners across eight states in its first phase.

Garba highlighted that the total allocation for the program is N5.18 billion, with N434.5 million released as the final tranche for the 2023/2024 cycle, enabling the completion of 11,484 ongoing projects nationwide. The program will focus on renovating dilapidated schools, providing classroom furniture, and improving water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities.
