UBEC Urges States to Maximize Basic Education Funds

The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) called on states to ensure full utilization of available funds and prompt implementation of approved programs to enhance basic education delivery in Nigeria. This call was made during a courtesy visit to the Delta State Government, represented by Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme, in Asaba, coinciding with the 30th Quarterly Meeting of UBEC Management with Executive Chairmen of State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs).

The meeting focused on optimizing investments in basic education. UBEC commended Delta State for accessing its UBE matching grants up to 2025 and encouraged the state to leverage the World Bank-supported HOPE Education Programme, which has $500 million earmarked for education.

Onyeme reported that Delta had about N1 billion in unutilized funds and had implemented approximately 90% of its 2025 Action Plan, having already received its 2026 matching grant. UBEC also praised Delta’s Attend360 system for teacher attendance as a model for accountability in education.
