King Oyo of Tooro Kingdom Dies at 34 After 31-Year Reign

King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of the Tooro Kingdom passed away at the age of 34 on August 27, 2026, while receiving medical treatment in the United States, as announced by the Prime Minister of Tooro Kingdom, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki. The official cause of death has not been disclosed, but media reports suggest a possible link to cancer, which has not been confirmed by Tooro authorities.

Oyo became king on September 12, 1995, at the age of three, following the death of his father, King Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. He was recognized as the world's youngest reigning monarch and formally assumed greater responsibilities at 18, being crowned in Fort Portal in 2010.

Despite Uganda being a republic, traditional kingdoms like Tooro retain cultural significance. The Tooro Kingdom has assured its people of the continuity of the monarchy, with a prince set to succeed King Oyo, whose identity will be announced according to Tooro customs.
