Ugo Ugochukwu Claims First FIA Formula 3 Victory in Melbourne

Ugo Ugochukwu, an 18-year-old Nigerian-American driver, achieved his first FIA Formula 3 victory at the Melbourne race. After a challenging start where he dropped to third place, Ugochukwu regained his composure and began to work his way back through the field.

By the second lap, he closed in on Freddie Slater and executed a decisive overtake at turn 9 to reclaim second place. Shortly after, he overtook Th Ophil Nael to seize the race lead.

Ugochukwu controlled the pace and gradually pulled away, creating a gap of around two seconds by lap 8. The race was briefly neutralized on lap 9 due to a crash involving Nandhavud Bhirombhakdi, which brought out the safety car.

Upon resuming on lap 12, Ugochukwu maintained his lead despite further drama behind him, including penalties for false starts and collisions. He ultimately finished ahead of Slater and Japan's Taito Kato, placing him at the top of the driver championship standings with 25 points.

Ugochukwu, born in New York City and the son of Nigerian supermodel Oluchi Onweagba, is part of the McLaren driver development program from 2021 to 2025.
