UK Home Office Allows Asylum Seekers to Stay with Family

The UK Home Office issued new guidance on Wednesday allowing asylum seekers to reside with friends or family in the United Kingdom rather than in Home Office accommodation. This arrangement will not impact the outcome of their asylum applications, and eligible asylum seekers will continue to receive weekly financial support for food and essential items.

Asylum seekers must confirm their friends or family can accommodate them and notify Migrant Help before moving. The Home Office warned that moving without prior notification could result in the loss of financial support.

The guidance also mentions potential assistance with travel costs to the new accommodation. This new policy is part of broader changes in the UK’s asylum and migration system aimed at reducing reliance on government-provided accommodation and increasing the return of individuals without legal status.

Recent measures include efforts to clear asylum appeal backlogs and restrictions on certain visa routes due to rising asylum claims.
