Nigerian Man Sentenced to Life for Leicester Murder

Chukwuemeka Ahanonu, a 24-year-old Nigerian man, was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of 56-year-old Nila Patel in Leicester. The incident occurred on June 24, 2025, when Ahanonu, driving under the influence of cannabis, crashed his vehicle on Infirmary Road.

Following the crash, he fled the scene and violently assaulted Patel, who was simply walking home. Patel suffered critical injuries, including a fractured skull and severe brain trauma, and died two days later on June 26, 2025.

Ahanonu had previously pleaded guilty to several offenses, including dangerous driving and possession of cannabis with intent to supply. He was arrested after police discovered a dealer-sized quantity of cannabis and three iPhones in his vehicle.

Inspector Emma Matt described the attack as a horrific and violent random assault on an innocent victim, praising the public for their prompt action in restraining Ahanonu during the incident.
