UK Envoy Stresses CSOs' Role in 2027 Election Integrity

On June 12, 2023, during a dialogue on democracy in Abuja, British Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, underscored the importance of civil society organizations (CSOs) in ensuring free, fair, and accountable elections in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

He highlighted the need for public confidence in the electoral process and encouraged advocacy and oversight to amplify citizens' voices. Montgomery praised the contributions and sacrifices made by CSOs over the past 27 years, noting the risks faced by individuals involved.

He stressed that the inclusivity of marginalized groups, including women, youth, and people with disabilities, is vital for building trust in electoral outcomes. Mr.

Clement Nwankwo, Executive Director of the Civil Liberties Organization, reflected on the struggles for democracy in Nigeria, citing both milestones and setbacks, including recent attempts to undermine democratic processes. The session featured discussions from various pro-democracy activists sharing their experiences and perspectives on Nigeria's democratic journey.
