INEC and UK Strengthen Ties for 2027 Election Security

On Wednesday, October 25, 2023, Prof. Joash Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), called for deeper collaboration with the United Kingdom on election security and technology in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

During a meeting with outgoing British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, Amupitan highlighted the UK's longstanding partnership with Nigeria in its democratic journey, noting the need for cooperation in areas such as election technology, cybersecurity, and voter education.

He mentioned significant progress made by INEC in preparing for the elections, including the rollout of enhanced technology and improvements in cybersecurity architecture. INEC has extended the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise for two weeks to ensure eligible Nigerians can register before the statutory deadline.

The meeting also focused on the importance of combating misinformation and ensuring civic education, particularly for women, youth, and persons with disabilities.
