UK Appoints Peter Vowl as New High Commissioner to Nigeria

The United Kingdom has officially appointed Peter Vowl as the new High Commissioner to Nigeria, with his tenure set to begin in September 2026. He will succeed Richard Montgomery, who will remain in his position until the transition is complete.

Vowl arrives in Nigeria with extensive diplomatic experience, having served as the UK Ambassador to Zimbabwe from 2023 to 2026 and previously as Ambassador to Myanmar from 2021 to 2022. His career includes senior leadership roles within the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), where he was involved in significant development programs across South Asia and Africa, including Bangladesh, India, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Kenya.

Vowl's appointment is seen as a strategic move, reflecting Nigeria's growing economic and geopolitical influence, and aims to deepen cooperation between the UK and Nigeria in key areas such as trade, investment, security, governance reform, education, and sustainable development.
