Burnham Aims for UK Leadership in Global AI Standards

During his inaugural speech at the United Nations General Assembly, Prime Minister Burnham outlined Britain's ambition to lead a global initiative on artificial intelligence (AI) standards. This marks his first multinational meeting as Britain's seventh prime minister in a decade.

Burnham emphasized the importance of harnessing the benefits of AI while addressing associated risks, including the potential for hostile actors to exploit AI for information warfare. He stated that fundamental decisions regarding AI should be made by elected governments rather than tech companies.

Additionally, Burnham announced the establishment of a new National Centre for Information Defence aimed at detecting and disrupting hostile state information attacks and identifying damaging deepfakes. He expressed Britain's readiness to take a leadership role in AI, leveraging its strong ties with the US, improving relations with the EU, and maintaining decent relations with China and India.

Burnham plans to place AI at the forefront of Britain's presidency of the G20 next year.
