UK Opens ETA Entry Path for 82 Nations; Only 2 African Countries Qualify

The United Kingdom has activated an Electronic Travel Authorisation programme granting entry to nationals from 82 countries without requiring a traditional visa application. Under this streamlined system, eligible travellers can enter Britain, Jersey, Guernsey, and the Isle of Man for stays of up to six months.
Nigerian citizens are not among those approved for the scheme. The UK government has defined four primary activities that ETA holders may undertake during their time in the country.
These include tourism, visiting family and friends, attending conferences or business meetings, and enrolling in short academic courses. The authorisation permits extended visits within the six-month window but does not permit long-term employment or permanent settlement.
Africa's representation in the approved list is notably limited. Only Mauritius and Seychelles, both island nations off the continent's coast, appear on the UK's roster of eligible countries.
This means the vast majority of sub-Saharan African states, including Nigeria, must continue pursuing conventional visa pathways through British diplomatic missions. The approved 82-nation list spans Europe, the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East.
Nations including Australia, Argentina, Canada, and most European Union member states qualify for the expedited entry system. Applicants must hold a valid passport from a recognised eligible country; alternative travel documents such as certificates of identity do not qualify for ETA status.
