UK Royal Navy Increases Monitoring of Russian Activity

The United Kingdom has escalated its monitoring of Russian military activities in UK waters and the North Atlantic, with Royal Navy operations increasing by 25% in the first seven months of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. The UK Ministry of Defence reported that Royal Navy warships and helicopters conducted operations for 21 days in July to observe Russian warships and submarines.

Four Royal Navy vessels—HMS Somerset, HMS Tyne, HMS Mersey, and HMS Severn—were deployed, along with Wildcat helicopters from 815 Naval Air Squadron and Merlin submarine-hunting aircraft. The Russian frigate RFN Neustrashimy was noted to have repeatedly transited the UK’s area of responsibility while escorting vessels part of Russia’s shadow fleet.

On July 20, HMS Tyne monitored Neustrashimy during gunnery exercises outside UK and French territorial waters, moving within five nautical miles to gather intelligence. The commanding officer of HMS Tyne, Lieutenant Commander Sam Fields, stated that the deployment allowed for effective monitoring while maintaining other commitments.

HMS Somerset also completed a four-month deployment in the North Atlantic, returning after covering over 24,000 nautical miles.
