Zelenskyy and Burnham Strengthen UK-Ukraine Defense Ties

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Britain’s newly elected Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, aboard the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth in Portsmouth. This meeting marked Zelenskyy’s first engagement with Burnham since he took office.

Both leaders agreed to deepen cooperation on drone production, electronic warfare, and missile defense as Ukraine faces intensified Russian attacks. They discussed establishing a drone production facility in Britain and exchanging expertise in drone and missile production.

A significant outcome was Britain’s agreement to provide Ukraine access to its “Stone Cloak” electronic warfare system, aimed at jamming enemy targeting systems. Burnham reaffirmed Britain’s unwavering support for Ukraine, pledging closer cooperation to strengthen Kyiv’s air defenses.

The discussions occurred against the backdrop of renewed Russian missile and drone attacks, which have caused civilian casualties and infrastructure damage. Since Russia’s invasion in 2022, the UK has committed approximately £25 billion in support for Ukraine, including £16 billion in military assistance.
