UK Home Office Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Workers

The UK Home Office has announced a plan to intensify enforcement against illegal working by introducing stricter compliance measures aimed at businesses employing unauthorized workers. This initiative comes in response to increasing pressure to tighten immigration controls and address concerns regarding illegal employment across various sectors.

The Home Office will adopt a zero-tolerance approach to illegal work, enhancing compliance activities that will include site inspections and verification checks of business premises. In 2025 alone, authorities conducted 12,791 illegal working visits, resulting in 8,971 arrests, marking the highest level of enforcement recorded in a single year.

Additionally, in January, the Home Office issued 1,000 civil penalty notices to businesses found hiring illegal workers, with fines reaching £60,000 per worker. This operation led to the removal of 1,700 individuals from the UK, where an estimated 10 to 11 million foreign-born residents account for 17% of the population, with a significant number remaining in the country without proper authorization.
