British Travellers Warned of ETIAS Scam Sites Amid Delays
British travellers are advised against applying for the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) visa waiver due to the emergence of over 150 fraudulent websites amid ongoing delays in the system's launch. ETIAS, which requires non-EU nationals, including UK citizens, to pay €20 for an electronic permit to enter the Schengen zone, was initially set to launch alongside the EU's entry-exit system (EES).
However, both systems have faced repeated delays, with no confirmed start date. Luke Petherbridge, director of public affairs at the travel association ABTA, stated that ETIAS should remain suspended until EES is fully operational.
Frontex, the pan-European border agency, has raised concerns about these scam platforms, which pose risks such as data theft and identity fraud. Public awareness of the upcoming border requirements has increased from 41% in 2024 to 56% currently, but this awareness has led some travellers to unofficial sites before ETIAS is active.
The fee for ETIAS has been revised from €7 to €20, with exemptions for those under 18 or over 70.
