UK Introduces eTA for Visa-Free Travel Up to Six Months

The UK government has published guidance on its Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) scheme, which allows eligible travellers to stay in the United Kingdom, Jersey, Guernsey, or the Isle of Man for up to six months without a traditional visa. The eTA is applicable for visits related to tourism, family visits, or other approved reasons.

The requirement for an eTA or a full visa depends on the traveller's nationality and the purpose of their trip. Nationals from Europe, Australia, and Canada are typically required to obtain an eTA for short stays.

The official fee for an eTA is £20 (approximately N35,830.64), payable through the UK government's online portal. Travellers are warned to avoid imitation websites that may charge higher fees.

Importantly, holding a valid eTA does not guarantee entry into the UK, as border officers can refuse entry upon arrival. This scheme is part of the UK's shift towards pre-travel electronic authorisation, similar to systems in the United States and Australia.
