Umahi Directs Concrete Use for Enugu-Onitsha Expressway

Engr. David Umahi, the Minister of Works, has instructed RCC Construction Company to utilize concrete for the remaining 23 km of the Enugu-Onitsha expressway instead of asphalt.

This decision was made during an inspection tour of the expressway, where Umahi expressed satisfaction with the quality of work completed so far. He highlighted that asphalt, costing N94,000 per square meter, does not last beyond 15 months, while concrete, at N92,000 per square meter, can endure for up to 100 years.

Umahi emphasized the need for contractors to ensure durability by properly preparing the road base and applying a mix of stone and cement. The project, which includes the completion of the remaining 800 meters of road at the Amansea-Axi immigration junction, is expected to be finished by the end of May 2026.

The project manager from MTN Nigeria, Engr. Tochukwu Onuora, praised the pace and quality of the work, which is part of a larger investment of N202 billion for road construction in the region.
