Minister Umahi Condemns Destruction of Federal Road Infrastructure in Nigeria

David Umahi, the Minister of Works, condemned the increasing destruction of federal road infrastructure in Nigeria during a press briefing in Abuja. He highlighted the critical issue of vandalism and theft affecting road components, particularly the removal of vital steel components from major bridges like the Niger Bridge and Cumberland Bridge.

Umahi stressed that such acts undermine the government's efforts to rehabilitate and expand the country's transport network. He mentioned the recent apprehension of suspects tampering with infrastructure on the Cumberland Bridge, noting the dangers of compromising structural integrity.

Umahi also expressed concerns about illegal encroachments on federal road corridors, hindering construction and maintenance efforts. The Ministry of Works has initiated the deployment of protective technology on bridges to deter vandals and assist security agencies in tracking offenders, aiming to safeguard public infrastructure.
