UN Allocates $48M for Humanitarian Air Services in Nigeria

The United Nations has allocated $48 million from its Central Emergency Response Fund to support humanitarian air services in Nigeria and seven other countries, including Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Kenya, South Sudan, Sudan, and Syria. This funding is crucial for enabling thousands of humanitarian workers from the UN, NGOs, and civil society to continue their operations in areas affected by conflict.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarr announced this allocation on Thursday at the UN headquarters in New York. The funding is particularly vital as the humanitarian situation in northeast Nigeria worsens, with the World Food Programme warning of potential cuts to emergency food and nutrition aid for 1.3 million people in the region by 2024.

The allocation was made possible by a recent $2 billion contribution from the United States to the UN-managed humanitarian fund in September 2025. However, the ongoing funding crisis has already forced the UN to suspend flights that are essential for aid delivery in conflict-hit areas.
