EU and UNICEF Launch €1M Education Initiative in Sokoto

On Thursday, the European Union and UNICEF announced a €1 million initiative aimed at restoring educational access for 20,000 children affected by conflict in Sokoto State, Nigeria. This program, which will span 24 months, focuses on getting school children back into classrooms and supporting those already enrolled through remedial learning and improved school sanitation facilities.

It will also provide psychosocial support for children traumatized by violence and displacement. Alexandr Castellano, UNICEF's representative in Nigeria, emphasized that no child's future should be determined by conflict, and the initiative seeks to create safe learning environments.

Wafaa Saeed, also from UNICEF, highlighted the critical timing of this intervention as insecurity continues to threaten educational opportunities in Sokoto. The initiative will train teachers in crisis-sensitive teaching methods and create child-friendly spaces to facilitate learning and recovery in a safer environment.
