UNDP Urges Nigeria to Prioritize Armed Forces Funding

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and civil society organizations (CSOs) have called on the Nigerian federal government to prioritize funding for the armed forces and security agencies in the country. They commended the swift actions taken by security agencies to resolve security challenges, particularly in the North East and North West regions, which are facing significant conflict driven by inter-community clashes, resource disputes, and criminal activities.

The organizations emphasized the need for the Minister of Finance and the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, to ensure the swift release of funds to the Nigerian Army and paramilitary sector, addressing payment backlogs and future obligations. They highlighted the importance of a well-funded security sector in safeguarding the economy and preserving national security.

The UNDP also announced a call for proposals inviting organizations to submit grant proposals for conflict prevention initiatives in the affected regions, supporting the Nigerian Army's efforts to promote peace and rule of law.
