UN Chief Warns Iran War Risks Broader Conflict

Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, warned on a recent date that the Iran war has spiraled beyond control, declaring that the conflict's management is critical as the world faces the prospect of a broader confrontation. He urged for an end to military escalation, emphasizing the deepening humanitarian crisis and increasing civilian casualties.

Guterres highlighted the significant economic impacts, particularly the disruption of oil and gas trade through the Strait of Hormuz, which handles approximately 25% of global oil trade. He called for Iran to cease attacks on Gulf countries and stressed the need for diplomatic solutions.

Guterres announced the appointment of Jean Arnault as his personal envoy to lead UN efforts in mediating peace in the region. The conflict has escalated following a joint US-Israel offensive on February 28, resulting in significant casualties, including the death of 1,300 people.

Guterres expressed hope that involved parties would reach an understanding to end the conflict.
