UN and NHRC Launch System to Protect Trafficking Victims

The United Nations, in collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and key border management agencies, is advancing efforts to create a coordinated referral system for victims of trafficking and vulnerable migrants. This initiative aims to replace fragmented responses with a structured protection mechanism.

The unveiling occurred during a specialized training on a human rights-based approach to border management in Sokoto, organized under the PROMIS project. Participants emphasized the need for early identification and referral of vulnerable migrants to appropriate services.

NHRC Executive Secretary, Dr. Tony Ojukwu (SAN), stated that the program reflects Nigeria's commitment to aligning border security with human rights. The Sokoto training extends efforts to Nigeria’s North-West border corridor, with plans for community engagement and a human rights assessment of the Illela International Border.

Esther Michael Sawa from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights urged practical solutions guided by dignity and non-discrimination, aiming to improve protection for vulnerable migrants.
