UN Report Shows Surge in Urban Climate Action Plans

The United Nations report indicates a significant increase in the number of countries incorporating urban climate measures into their national climate action plans, with 80% of nations now submitting urban-centric strategies compared to 49% in previous submissions. This analysis was released following the 13th session of the World Urban Forum in Azerbaijan, which reviewed 142 national climate plans.

The report highlights that 87% of countries include urban adaptation measures, with 54% targeting infrastructure, water management, and biodiversity. It also notes that nearly half of the submitted plans address housing issues, reflecting a growing recognition of the interconnectedness of climate change and housing challenges.

Anacl Udia Rossbach, Executive Director of UN-Habitat, stated that cities are becoming central to global climate action. However, the report warns that climate financing for urban initiatives remains inadequate, with only 19% of plans containing dedicated urban financing mechanisms.

Murat Kurum, Turkey's Minister of Environment, emphasized the importance of sharing experiences to enhance urban resilience.
