China Launches AI Training Initiative for Developing Nations

On Friday, during the opening ceremony of the 2026 World AI Conference in Shanghai, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced a significant initiative aimed at providing 5,000 artificial intelligence (AI) training opportunities for developing countries over the next five years. This initiative is part of China's broader effort to promote inclusive AI development and strengthen global cooperation in emerging technologies.

Xi emphasized the importance of ensuring that developing nations are not left behind in the global AI revolution and highlighted the need for equal access to technology to achieve sustainable development. The initiative will involve establishing an international AI application cooperation center and will include organizations such as the African Union, ASEAN, and CELAC.

Xi also called for stronger multilateral governance frameworks to ensure that AI development reflects the interests of all countries and not just a select few. He warned against the misuse of AI and the potential risks it poses to public safety and privacy.
