UNEP Hosts Webinars to Combat Methane Emissions in Nigeria

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is expanding its support to Nigeria by facilitating stakeholder engagement aimed at developing a framework to limit methane emissions in the agriculture sector. The UNEP’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) will conduct a two-day series of webinars to enhance Nigeria's capacity to measure, quantify, and manage methane emissions, particularly from livestock, manure management, and rice cultivation.

This initiative is part of the Nigeria Methane Emission Reduction Pilot Programme (NiMERP), funded by the European Union (EU) Delegation to Nigeria and implemented in collaboration with the Government of Nigeria. The webinars will build on previous training in the oil, gas, and waste sectors, focusing on agricultural methane, which is challenging to estimate due to its diffuse nature.

Nigeria’s Third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) prioritizes agriculture for methane mitigation, and the webinars aim to equip stakeholders with the necessary skills for effective management and reporting of methane emissions.
