NUPRC Unveils Methane Emission Reduction Platform
The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has launched a platform to reduce methane emissions, aiming for a 60 percent reduction by 2035. Eniola Akinkuotu, Head of Media and Corporate Communications at NUPRC, stated that the initiative is part of the Commission's efforts to implement its 2022 Guidelines for the Management of Fugitive Methane and Greenhouse Gas Emissions in the Upstream Oil and Gas Sector.
The platform, named NOGIET, was handed over to the Commission Chief Executive, Mrs Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, at the NUPRC headquarters in Abuja. The guidelines mandate operators to shift from estimation-based to measurement-based emissions reporting by the first quarter of 2027.
Eyesan noted that NOGIET integrates satellite-based methane plume detection and facility-level emissions measurements, which will help regulators identify emission hotspots and enhance compliance monitoring. The platform was developed in partnership with the Stakeholder Democracy Network, with support from the Global Methane Hub, and is designed for use by both NUPRC and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
