UNESCO Launches Media Literacy Workbooks for Kids

UNESCO, in collaboration with its partners, unveiled media and information literacy workbooks for children aged six to ten at an event held at the United Nations House in Abuja. The workbooks aim to equip children with essential skills to identify fake news, verify information, and think critically before sharing content.
Dr Isaías Barreto da Rosa, UNESCO Representative to Nigeria and Head of the UNESCO Abuja Office, emphasized the importance of education in combating the spread of false information. He stated that teaching children to check facts and question information sources would foster a more informed society.
Dr Lateef Idowu Olagunju, Secretary-General of the Nigerian National Commission for UNESCO, highlighted the need for children to have practical tools to assess information in a complex digital environment. Chiamaka Okafor-Onumah, Executive Director of the Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue Foundation, noted that the workbook, titled Young Truth Detectives, includes six interactive missions and is intended for use in various community settings.
