Wahab Shittu Addresses Unexplained Wealth in Nigeria

Wahab Shittu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, expressed concerns that Nigeria's progress is significantly hindered by the issue of "unexplained wealth." He made these remarks on Monday during the public presentation of his three-volume book, "Unexplained Wealth: A Trilogy of Nigerian Financial Law," at Oriental Hotel in Lagos State. Shittu highlighted that despite Nigeria's rich human and natural resources, much of the wealth is siphoned away through unexplained means.

He argued that a robust mechanism for recovering such wealth is essential for the country's advancement. Shittu criticized the wrongful prosecution of innocent individuals in the legal system, asserting that wealth acquisition is not inherently criminal, but illicit acquisition is indefensible.

He noted the book's relevance to anti-corruption agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). Shittu's inspiration for the book stemmed from his legal experiences, including a Supreme Court case regarding asset justification.
