Obasanjo, Sanusi, Osinbajo Discuss Wealth Enforcement in Nigeria

At the public presentation of “Unexplained Wealth: A Trilogy of Nigerian Financial Law” in Lagos, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II, and former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo shared contrasting views on tackling unexplained wealth in Nigeria. Obasanjo, who chaired the event, described corruption as “development’s greatest, deadly peril,” highlighting its adverse effects on the poor and recalling his administration's efforts to enhance anti-corruption frameworks through institutions like the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Emir Sanusi stressed the importance of fair and consistent enforcement of anti-corruption laws, warning against selective application based on political affiliations. Represented by his former Chief of Staff, Ade Ipaye, Osinbajo advocated for a constitutionally sound approach to asset recovery that safeguards legitimate property rights.

The book's author, Dr. Wahab Shittu, aimed to develop a system to differentiate between legitimate wealth and illicit enrichment.
