UNICEF Urges Ethical Media Reporting on Children

On Thursday, Dr. Karanv Singh, the Chief Field Officer for UNICEF in Kano, emphasized the importance of ethical reporting on children during a training session for media practitioners in Kano and Jigawa State.

He highlighted the need for responsible journalism, particularly in North West Nigeria, to build trust, promote peace, and protect vulnerable children. Dr.

Singh outlined three key reasons why ethical reporting is crucial: it builds trust, heals divisions, and enhances the credibility of the profession. He cited examples of irresponsible reporting that re-traumatizes survivors, stigmatizes children, and spreads misinformation.

Dr. Singh urged journalists to prioritize accuracy, protect children's identities, and seek multiple perspectives.

UNICEF officials called on media practitioners to use their platforms to advocate for children's rights and hold elected officials accountable. He noted that the media has a unique opportunity to shape narratives in North West Nigeria and promote a better future for children.
