UNICEF Urges Ethical Reporting on Children's Issues

UNICEF has called on journalists to adopt ethical reporting practices when covering issues involving children, especially those who are survivors of abuse and violence. This appeal was made by Sussan Akila, the UNICEF country representative, during a workshop held in Gombe State, aimed at the Northeast and North Central regions of Nigeria.

Akila emphasized the responsibility of journalists to report in a manner that protects children and supports their development, particularly in crisis situations. She noted the challenges journalists face in accessing information, especially in conflict zones, and highlighted the media's power to shape public discourse and influence societal responses to issues affecting children.

Akila urged journalists to consider the impact of their reports, including photographs and headlines, on the lives of child victims, warning against the publication of identifying details that could expose them to stigma and long-term trauma. The workshop aimed to equip participants with the knowledge and confidence to produce responsible stories that prioritize the dignity and safety of children.
