UNILESA Partners NSCDC to Combat Open Grazing Issues

On Wednesday, April 2023, Prof. Olufemi Asaolu, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilesa (UNILESA) in Osun State, announced a strategic plan to combat the menace of open grazing on campus by collaborating with officials from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Asaolu highlighted the frequent incursions of herders with cattle on campus, which have created security concerns and contributed to illegal mining activities. The initiative will involve hiring an agro ranger unit that can communicate effectively with herders, thereby reducing tensions and illegal activities.

Asaolu noted past incidents of illegal mining and confrontations with herders, emphasizing the need for a proactive approach. He also mentioned that UNILESA has achieved significant growth in its academic programs, with 97 courses approved by the National Universities Commission, and a student population increase to 15,000 over three years, reflecting public confidence in the institution's offerings.
