Union Berlin Condemns Sexist Abuse of Coach Mari Louis Eta

Union Berlin has publicly condemned the "insane sexist abuse" aimed at their interim head coach, Mari Louis Eta, following her historic appointment as the first woman to lead a men's team in Europe's top five football leagues. The club's director of football, Horst Heldt, issued a statement on Tuesday, strongly criticizing the abuse and reaffirming the focus on Eta's coaching qualities and leadership skills.

He expressed full confidence in her abilities, stating that her appointment was based strictly on merit and not gender. Eta, who previously served as an assistant coach at Union Berlin and has experience leading the U19 team, made history in January 2024 when she briefly led the team during a Bundesliga match.

She is expected to conduct her first training session as interim head coach on Tuesday. Heldt praised her rapid adjustment to the role and emphasized that the club will not be distracted by online abuse as they prepare for upcoming matches.
