UNIPORT Hospital Halts Salaries for 1,000 Workers

The University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital in River State has suspended the salaries of 1,000 workers after a recent staff audit revealed that only 2,000 out of 4,000 employees on the payroll were physically present and verified. Chief Medical Director, Prof.

Chituru Orluwen, disclosed this information in a briefing on Monday, marking the first 100 days of his office. He emphasized the necessity of the verification exercise to ensure that only eligible staff receive salaries.

The audit process aims to address issues of salary payments to individuals not actively working. Prof.

Orluwen noted that the hospital is also implementing measures to block revenue leakages and improve operational efficiency, aligning with President Bola Tinubu's agenda. Additionally, the hospital plans to introduce patient fees and tackle corruption among staff, including the prohibition of receiving payments in private accounts.

The management is also addressing environmental issues, such as mosquito infestations, by repairing broken drainage systems.
