UNN Supports Climate Finance Research for Sustainability

The University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Prof. Simon Ortuanya, is actively backing climate finance research to promote sustainable development.

Ortuanya emphasized the importance of climate finance in addressing environmental challenges and enhancing resilience against climate impacts during a stakeholder workshop in Abuja. The program, organized by the Resource and Environment Policy Research Centre and the Environmental Development Foundation, aims to unlock development equity in Africa.

Prof. Nnaemeka Chukwuon, Director of EFD at UNN, introduced the project and highlighted the need for stakeholder engagement across various sectors.

Dr. Tenioy Majekodunmi, Director General of the National Council on Climate Change, discussed the necessity of translating climate commitments into tangible investments.

Mrs. Halima Bawa from the Ministry of Environment noted that Nigeria's climate finance efforts face challenges despite existing policy frameworks.

The workshop also addressed the need for stronger domestic financing and innovative financial solutions to tackle climate change effectively.
