UNILAG Professor Advocates for Sustainable Environmental Practices

During the 456th inaugural lecture series at the University of Lagos, Professor Amidu Owolabi Ayeni emphasized the need for interdisciplinary environmental education and climate-resilient infrastructure to tackle sustainability challenges in Nigeria. He highlighted the interconnectedness of environmental issues, particularly water insecurity, which is exacerbated by government lapses and socio-economic disparities.

Ayeni called for collaborative efforts among scientists, policymakers, and local communities to improve data sharing and address these challenges. He stressed the importance of indigenous knowledge systems in environmental monitoring and agricultural innovation, particularly in marginalized environments.

Vice Chancellor Professor Folasade Ogunsola supported Ayeni's views, noting that indigenous knowledge should be integrated into frameworks for sustainability. Ayeni's research underscores the need for participatory planning and equitable distribution of water resources, advocating for the adoption of integrated water resource management to enhance community resilience against environmental changes.
