Nigerian Student Sentenced for Gun Incident, Faces Deportation

Godson Oghenebrum, a 23-year-old Nigerian student in the United States, was sentenced to 27 months in prison after being convicted of illegal possession of a firearm and discharging it during a dispute with his ex-girlfriend. The sentencing was conducted by U.S.

Chief Judge Shelli Dick, following a statement from U.S. Attorney Kurt Wall.

Oghenebrum, who was in the U.S. on a non-immigrant F-1 student visa, admitted to possessing a Glock model 43X 9mm pistol. The incident occurred on February 7, 2025, when Oghenebrum argued with his ex-girlfriend, who was present with her infant child.

During the argument, he discharged the firearm multiple times. Oghenebrum attempted to evade arrest when deputies from the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office arrived, discarding the weapon in a shrub.

He faces deportation upon completing his sentence, as he is subject to removal from the United States due to his conviction.
