FIFA confirms referee Omar Artan will not officiate at the 2026 World Cup after US authorities denied him entry despite holding a valid visa.

Somalia's football community has been dealt a significant blow after the United States denied entry to referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, preventing him from officiating at the 2026 World Cup tournament. FIFA announced on Monday that Artan will be unable to participate in the competition due to the visa denial, marking a setback for the East African nation's representation at the global football showpiece.

Artan was selected as part of FIFA's roster of 52 referees for the tournament, which will be hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the United States. He was set to become the first Somali official to work at a World Cup final. Despite holding valid travel documentation, Artan was turned away at Miami International Airport on Saturday and subsequently returned to Istanbul. Somalia's sports ministry expressed deep regret over the situation, noting that diplomatic engagement with US authorities failed to reverse the decision.

Andrew Giuliani, executive director of the White House task force overseeing World Cup preparations, defended the visa denial on Tuesday, citing security concerns. Giuliani stated that the decision was made to prevent individuals classified as security risks from entering the country during the tournament. He did not provide specific details about Artan's case but indicated the determination was made in the interest of event safety. Somalia is among nations subject to travel restrictions implemented under the current US administration.

FIFA stated it holds no responsibility for visa adjudication, noting that host governments retain ultimate authority over entry decisions. The football governing body confirmed that Artan's participation status will not change under current circumstances. Somalia's senior sports adviser told international media that Artan was among Africa's most respected referees and had recently received continental recognition for his officiating work across African competitions.
