U.S. Designates Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as Terrorists

On March 16, 2026, the U.S. Department of State officially designated the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood (SMB) as a terrorist organization.

This decision, announced in a press statement by Marco Rubio, cites the group's unrestrained violence against civilians and its role in undermining efforts to resolve the conflict in Sudan. The SMB, which includes the armed wing Al Baraa bin Malik Brigade (BBMB), has reportedly contributed over 20,000 fighters to the ongoing war in Sudan, receiving training and support from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The designation is part of a broader strategy to isolate entities and individuals associated with terrorism, denying them access to the U.S. financial system. The U.S.

Treasury Department had previously imposed sanctions on the BBMB in September 2025 under Executive Order 14098 due to its destabilizing activities in Sudan. The designation will enable the U.S. to block transactions and restrict business engagements with the SMB, exposing those who do not comply to secondary sanctions.
